Speaker Alban S.K. Bagbin in a handshake with Most Rev. Francis Bomansaan
The Wa Diocese of the Catholic Church has honoured the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, in recognition of what it described as his enduring legacy of leadership grounded in wisdom, humility and service to humanity.
The honour was conferred during a special Eucharistic Celebration held in the Speaker’s honour at the Chapel of the Bishop of the Wa Diocese on January 30, 2026.
The event brought together clergy and congregants who gathered to celebrate the Speaker’s contribution to national development and his commitment to public service.
Delivering a sermon during the ceremony, the Bishop of the Wa Diocese, Most Rev. Francis Bomansaan, praised Mr. Bagbin’s outstanding statesmanship and unwavering dedication to the welfare of the less privileged in society.
He noted that both the Upper West Region and Ghana as a whole were fortunate to have a leader whose public life has been characterised by selflessness and strong moral values.
According to Bishop Bomansaan, Mr. Bagbin exemplifies the virtues of a devout Catholic and a servant leader, whose actions continue to inspire many within and beyond the Church.
A citation presented to Mr. Bagbin described him as a leader whose qualities mirror Christ-like virtues of humility, integrity, service and love.
It further commended his reputation for honesty and moral uprightness, describing him as a guiding light in a time when public confidence in leadership is often tested.
In his response, Mr. Bagbin expressed profound appreciation to the Church for the recognition, and called for continued prayers and spiritual support for the leadership of the country.
He acknowledged the significant role religious institutions play in shaping moral leadership and promoting national unity.
Speaker Bagbin highlighted the immense contribution of the Catholic Church to the country’s development, particularly in deprived regions such as the Upper West Region.
He described the Church as a cornerstone of socio-economic development in Northern Ghana, citing its role in establishing and managing some of the most reputable educational and healthcare facilities in the region.
Mr. Bagbin encouraged the Church to sustain its commitment to addressing both the spiritual and material needs of vulnerable populations.
He also assured that Parliament would continue to support the efforts of religious bodies and faith-based organisations working toward national development.
As part of the ceremony, Bishop Bomansaan, together with a congregation of priests, offered special prayers for the Speaker, seeking divine protection, good health and wisdom for him as he continues to serve the nation.
