Vinicius Jr. complaining to the referee
A Champions League knockout play-off match between Real Madrid and Benfica was suspended for about 10 minutes after Vinicius Junior reported an alleged racist comment from Benfica youngster Gianluca Prestianni.
The incident happened just after Vinicius Jr scored and celebrated in front of the home crowd, earning a booking.
Prestianni then approached him and spoke while covering his mouth with his shirt. Vinicius Jr. immediately alerted referee Francois Letexier, who activated FIFA’s anti-racism protocol and halted play.
During the stoppage, players and staff from both sides gathered in discussions with officials. Vinicius Jr. later said racism incidents are not new to him and criticised the handling of the situation, saying the protocol applied did little to address the issue. He also questioned why his celebration drew a yellow card.
Benfica coach Jose Mourinho was seen speaking with the Madrid forward during the delay. A Benfica staff member and Mourinho were both later sent off for separate incidents as tensions rose.
Madrid went on to win 1–0. The closing minutes saw another brief delay after objects were thrown from the stands toward Vinicius Jr.
Prestianni denied making racist remarks, saying his words were misunderstood. Benfica released video of the moment to support his account. UEFA says the matter is under review.
