Kwesi Afreh Biney interacting with pensioners
Director General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Kwesi Afreh Biney, has disclosed that the scheme will soon launch a telemedicine service to enable pensioners to receive medical consultations remotely via phone and digital platforms, improving healthcare access—particularly for retirees in remote areas.
“The telemedicine idea is part of our key initiatives this year and we are very confident that by the end of June 2026 we should be able to finalise the process,” he said.
Mr. Biney said the model will serve the health needs of pensioners and members.
“From the 13.5% contribution collected from employers, 2.5% is remitted to fund the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). As a result, every SSNIT member is automatically an NHIA member… Just as we remit to the NHIA, payments will be made to the Trust Hospital for services provided to our members under the framework SSNIT, the Trust Hospital and the NHIA have already begun,” he said.
At the 2026 Employers’ Workshop in Tamale, held under the theme “60 Years of Social Security: Employers Driving Compliance to Secure Ghana’s Workforce,” Mr. Biney said SSNIT remains a trusted scheme.
“Our trust remains strong. We have paid pensions consistently for the last 60 years without fail and we will continue to do so. The value of our investments keeps growing: at the end of 2024 assets under management stood at GH¢ 20.4 billion and by the end of 2025 they were in excess of GH¢ 25 billion,” he stressed.
He added that SSNIT is committed to building a strong trust and improving services for members.
The SSNIT Boss indicated that they have introduced virtual branches to boost convenience and emphasised the scheme’s improved employer compliance.
He also announced that SSNIT will soon roll out a loyalty programme enabling pensioners to enjoy discounts at selected hotels, retail shops and partner facilities across the country adding that the initiative forms part of the Trust’s effort to enhance pensioners’ welfare with benefits beyond monthly pensions.
Mr. Seth Kpakpa Quartey, Tamale Area Manager, urged pensioners at the 2026 engagement to share their experiences to help shape SSNIT’s services.
