Chairman Wontumi
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, has called on party executives in the Western Region to prioritise competence and strategic leadership over fluency in the King’s English when electing the party’s next National Chairman.
Popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the three-time Ashanti Regional Chairman made the appeal while addressing executives and party faithful in the Western Region. He stressed that the current political climate requires a National Chairman who truly represents the party’s core values, aspirations and determination to reclaim power in 2028.
“This election is not one for the record books; it is for those who are tried and tested at the grassroots level—someone who is popular and ready to work tirelessly for victory in 2028,” he declared to an enthusiastic crowd.
Chairman Wontumi urged party members to assess him based on his competence, experience and proven track record rather than academic qualifications. “Don’t judge me based on my certificate, but on my competency and what I can do for the total growth of the party,” he stated.
According to him, the time has come to entrust the leadership of the party to individuals who have consistently demonstrated political wisdom and commitment to returning the NPP to power.
Reflecting on the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chairman Wontumi said the experience has strengthened his resolve to work harder for victory in 2028. He expressed confidence in the party’s prospects and pledged to help make Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia the next President of Ghana.
“At this critical moment, what we can offer our members and Ghanaians is hope and reassurance. I am built for the battle ahead,” he affirmed, appealing for massive support for his ambition.
He noted that his long years of service to the party—from serving as a two-term Constituency Chairman to becoming an unprecedented three-time Ashanti Regional Chairman—have adequately prepared him for the national role. He assured party faithful that he would not compromise on any principle that would weaken the party’s appeal to voters.
“As National Chairman, my focus will be on the constituencies,” he explained. “While the General Secretary manages affairs at the party headquarters, my responsibility will be to work with the grassroots to mobilise every vote needed for victory in 2028.”
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Western Regional Chairman of the NPP, Nana Francis Ndede Siah, described Chairman Wontumi as a genuine grassroots politician who deserves the full backing of the party.
