Ghanaian content-focused channel on DStv, Akwaaba Magic, marked its fifth anniversary in Accra on March 2, 2026.

Speaking at the anniversary celebration, Managing Director of DStv Ghana, Alex Okyere, described the milestone as a demonstration of Ghanaian creativity in elevating its local talent.

“Five years ago, we embarked on a bold journey to create a different narrative for Ghana, to tell authentic Ghanaian stories, elevate local talent and give our filmmakers, actors, writers and technical teams a home where their craft could shine,” he said.

According to him, more than GH¢200 million has been invested in local productions since the channel’s launch, and noted that Akwaaba Magic has grown beyond being just a television channel to becoming “a cultural force” that reflects the Ghanaian society.

He also expressed gratitude to producers, directors, writers, cast and crew for their dedication, as well as viewers across Ghana and the continent for embracing the stories shared on the platform.

“As we celebrate this milestone, we reaffirm our commitment to quality, authenticity and partnership. The next chapter of Akwaaba Magic will see even deeper investments in local productions, stronger collaborations with creatives and expanded opportunities for emerging talent,” he added.

Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA), James Gardiner, also commended Akwaaba Magic for its contribution to Ghana’s film and television ecosystem.

He said the channel has played a critical role in providing a dependable platform for authentic Ghanaian storytelling and creating sustainable opportunities within the industry.

“Through its original programming, the channel has amplified our cultural identity and strengthened our presence in the African entertainment landscape. One of the most commendable achievements of Akwaaba Magic is its unwavering commitment to authentic Ghanaian storytelling,” he stated.

He explained that the channel’s collaborations with local production houses and creative entrepreneurs align with the National Film Authority’s mandate to build a sustainable and globally competitive film industry.

“You have helped open doors for emerging talent while providing established creators with a stable platform to innovate and also thrive equally. Your collaborations with local production houses, technical crews and creative entrepreneurs reflect the very spirits of the NFS mandate to develop a sustainable, globally competitive film ecosystem,” he explained.

The channel has aired a range of original content spanning drama, comedy, reality shows and documentaries. Some flagship productions, including ‘Dede’, ‘House of Klu’, ‘Sankofa’ and ‘Eno’, have gained significant popularity and helped redefine appointment viewing for many households.
