Some of the suspects
A joint operation by the Amansie West District Assembly, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and the police has led to the arrest of 28 foreign nationals and a landlord for allegedly violating Ghana’s immigration laws.
The suspects were arrested during a swoop at their hideouts at Pakyi No.1 and Pakyi No.2 in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.
The operation formed part of efforts by the district authorities and security agencies to clamp down on illegal immigration and other unlawful activities in the area.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Amansie West, Prince Manu Morris, who spoke to journalists after the exercise, cautioned landlords against renting their properties to undocumented immigrants.
According to him, it is the responsibility of landlords to verify the identity and immigration status of individuals before offering them accommodation.
“It is against the laws of Ghana to harbour undocumented immigrants. Landlords must therefore ensure they check the documents of people they rent their properties to,” he stated.
Mr. Morris stressed that the Assembly would not tolerate any form of illegal activity within the district.
He also assured that the Assembly would continue to collaborate with security agencies to enforce immigration laws and maintain peace and security in the area.
The arrested foreigners are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the landlord is also expected to face charges for allegedly renting out his property to undocumented immigrants.
Mr. Morris further urged residents to support the fight against illegal immigration by reporting suspicious persons and activities to the authorities.
“Security is a collective responsibility, and together we can ensure that our district remains safe and secure,” he added.
