The suspects

The Ghana Police Service has arrested eight suspected highway robbers in a special intelligence-led operation by the police, following a recent attack on the Mampong–Ejura highway.

The operation, which lead to a member of the gang being gunned down by the police, was carried out by the Ashanti North Regional Police Command in collaboration with the NOD/Surveillance Unit from Accra.

It targeted suspects linked to a robbery incident at Aframso Bridge on March 26, 2026.

According to the police, six armed men attacked a driver, Appiah Joseph, who was conveying 14 passengers in a Ssangyong minibus from Kumasi to Atebubu. The robbers reportedly made away with cash and mobile phones belonging to the victims.

After the incident, police gathered intelligence and mounted surveillance on the suspects. This led to a swoop at a hotel in Ejura on March 30, 2026, where the suspects were allegedly found sharing money believed to be proceeds from the robbery.

The eight suspects arrested have been identified as Amidu Sajo, 42; Ibrahim Sule, 36; Karim Hadu, 40; Malik Jibrilla, 38; Yusifa Asakoko, 23; Umaru Issifu, 20; Damani Yamba, 36; and Ibrahim Iddrisu, also known as “Bule,” aged 43.

Police said Ibrahim Iddrisu, who was on a wanted list in connection with previous robbery cases, attempted to escape during the operation. In the process, he allegedly attacked a police officer with a cutlass and tried to seize the officer’s weapon.

He sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation and was rushed to the Mampong Government Hospital before being referred to the Jamasi Pope John Paul Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

Items retrieved during the operation included two rounds of AK-47 ammunition, three cutlasses, an amount of GH¢15,717, eight mobile phones, a talisman, an ID card, and a side bag.

The remaining suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue for preservation.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Felix Apedo, Ashanti North Regional Commander, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating highway robbery and ensuring the safety of residents and road users.

He also called on the public to continue cooperating with the police as efforts intensify to track down other suspects and recover additional weapons.
