Persons With Disabilities Calls For Greater Support

Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled has issued a strong appeal to political, religious, and community leaders to address what it describes as the continued neglect of persons with physical disabilities, despite widespread charitable giving during recent religious celebrations.
In an open letter released following the Sallah and Easter festivities, Courage Wormenor, National President of the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled, acknowledged the generosity shown through the donation of food items and household supplies to various groups.
However, he stressed that critical support for people with disabilities—particularly mobility aids such as wheelchairs—remains largely absent.
According to Wormenor, while items like rice, sugar, and water storage containers were widely distributed, the “deafening silence” around providing essential equipment for the physically disabled highlights a gap in inclusive support systems.
He noted that individuals with disabilities continue to live within communities, attending the same churches and mosques, yet often face daily challenges without adequate assistance. Referencing religious teachings, he urged leaders to reflect on values of compassion and inclusion, pointing to both Christian and Islamic principles that emphasize care for the vulnerable.
The statement called directly on Members of Parliament, clergy, and Imams to take concrete steps toward supporting persons with disabilities. It also appealed to families to reconnect with disabled relatives and advocate for their needs.
“The disabled deserve more than acknowledgement—they deserve empowerment,” Wormenor stated, emphasizing the need for long-term solutions that promote accessibility and independence.
The appeal adds to growing conversations around inclusivity in social welfare efforts, particularly during major religious and cultural events where charitable giving is most visible.
