Alban Bagbin
Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has strengthened Ghana’s presence at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Istanbul, Türkiye, following the successful nomination of key parliamentary figures to influential international roles.
The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, has been endorsed as a member of the IPU’s Resolution Drafting Committee.
His endorsement by members of the African Geopolitical Group followed his nomination by Speaker Bagbin, who also serves as President of the African Geopolitical Group within the IPU.
Mr. Ahiafor’s nomination received unanimous approval, which reflects strong confidence among African delegates in his competence and ability to contribute meaningfully to the committee’s work.
The Resolution Drafting Committee plays a critical role in shaping key policy decisions and outcomes of the IPU Assembly.
In addition to Mr. Ahiafor, Speaker Bagbin also nominated the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of South Africa to serve on the same committee.
This nomination was equally endorsed unanimously by the African Geopolitical Group, further demonstrating unity and collaboration among African parliamentary leaders on the global stage.
Beyond the committee nominations, Mr. Bagbin actively engaged in a series of high-level bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Assembly.
He held discussions with parliamentary delegations from Australia, Algeria, Belgium, Canada, Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco, Qatar, Türkiye, and Ukraine.
The engagements focused on strengthening economic cooperation, enhancing parliamentary diplomacy, and deepening collaboration in critical sectors such as trade, investment, and regional development.
The discussions also highlighted the importance of building resilient economies and promoting sustainable development across participating countries.
A key theme which ran through the meetings was the need for stronger African solidarity in addressing shared challenges, including security threats, economic vulnerabilities, and development constraints.
Mr. Bagbin emphasised the importance of collective action and strategic partnerships in advancing the continent’s interests on the global stage.
The interactions also provided an opportunity for Ghana to showcase its commitment to democratic governance and international cooperation, while exploring avenues for mutually beneficial partnerships with countries across different regions.
