A 17-year-old final-year student of Asanteman Senior High School (SHS) has reportedly been electrocuted while using his mobile phone during a rainstorm at Meduma in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region.
The deceased, identified only as Harrison, is said to have returned home from school and plugged his mobile phone into a charger before the incident occurred.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that the victim was making a phone call with the device still connected to power when lightning struck during the heavy downpour.
The electrical surge reportedly passed through the phone, electrocuting him instantly.
The incident is said to have left severe burns around his neck and ears.
His body has since been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Confirming the incident, the Assemblyman for the Meduma Electoral Area, Mr. Agyenim Boateng, described the development as unfortunate and advised residents to avoid using electronic devices connected to power during rainstorms.
“It is very unfortunate. I urge residents, especially the youth, not to use phones that are connected to electricity when it is raining. We must all take precautions to avoid such painful incidents,” he appealed.
Police have meanwhile commenced investigations into the matter.
