Israel Kwadwo Safo (Left) and his accomplice. INSET: The weapons
The Ghana Police Service has arrested Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Akofena, in connection with the shooting incident that left former Dome-Kwabenya MP Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo injured on June 21, 2026.
Tension has been brewing within the Kristo Asafo Mission since the death of its founder, Apostle Emeritus Kwadwo Safo. The dispute centers on succession to lead the church, with Akofena reportedly organizing supporters to install himself as the next leader.
The June 21 ceremony to introduce a new leader ended in chaos when gunfire erupted at Akofena’s Kwabenya residence, leaving Adwoa Safo with a gunshot wound to her left ear and her vehicle riddled with bullet holes.
According to police, Akofena reported himself to the Regional Police Headquarters on June 22 and was transferred to the CID Headquarters to assist investigations.
A search of his vehicle and residence at Kwabenya yielded:
– 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition
– 50 rounds of .45 calibre ammunition
– 25 rounds of .40 calibre ammunition
– Additional loaded magazines
– Two Glock pistols, one registered in his name
Further investigations led to the arrest of two more suspects: Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson.
All three suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be put before court on June 23, 2026, as CID continues its probe into the incident.
