Kweku Smoke
Social media is buzzing following Kweku Smoke’s surprise performance after colleague musician, Gyakie, who was billed to perform cited disorganisation by KNUST’s SRC leaders as her reason for skipping the July 25 Artiste Night, despite hype from media pages and students who paid dues for the show.
Fellow KNUST graduate, Kweku Smoke, stepped in unannounced, performing high-energy tracks into the early hours and earning cheers from the lively crowd. The SRC thanked him amid backlash over expecting alumni to perform for free, turning a tense night into a celebratory one with shared stage moments.
This incident has turned into social media debate with some section shaming Gyakie for boycotting the show while fellow artistes took over the entire show with fewer expectations from patrons.
Dr. Sneaker Nyame on X wrote, “Kweku Smoke heard what people were saying about the school that made him and decided to pull up and perform for them for free. That’s a proper alumnus.”
PeeCeetheboss also wrote, “Kweku Smoke came to perform for free last year and even paid the fees of some students, so KNUST executives think all alumni’s who are musicians will perform for free. International artiste like Gyakie you want make she come perform for free sia. Abovi dea I sure say dem buy am food p3 (sic).”
Mr. Ahenkorah also stated, “Kweku Smoke drove all the way from Accra to Kumasi last night just to perform for free in his 2026 Free The Youth x Air Jordan 16 SP for KNUST students. Gyakie deɛ sɛ jon.”
Kofiiklein wrote, “Kweku Smoke was booed when he was an upcoming artiste by KNUST students even though he was an alumni, but he performed at KNUST SRC twice in a row for free, he’ll always have the streets.”
Gyakie was booed while performing her first song as a student musician at KNUST during Republic Hall Week 2019, which made her cry. Many are of the view that she declined to perform due to her previous encounter with the student body.
