Thousands of mourners from across the country gathered at Gomoa Mpota in the Central Region yesterday to join former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament (MP), Sarah Adwoa Safo, for the first session of the burial of her late father, Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.
The atmosphere was one of grief mixed with celebration.
Clad in red and black cloth with the late Apostle’s image printed on it, mourners described the late Apostle as a visionary, industrialist and philanthropist whose good deeds touched lives across the country and beyond.
“He built people, not just machines,” one mourner said. “He taught us to work with our hands and serve with our hearts,” Kumawood actress Mercy Asiedu added.
Madam Adwoa Safo’s arrival at the funeral grounds was met with cheers and chants. The former MP, visibly emotional, sat with family as the clergy led prayers and tributes.
Sources say the mortal remains of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka will be buried at Kristo Asafo Mission at Gomoa Mpota, which also houses a museum in his honour.
Court Injunction
The funeral took place after an Accra High Court placed a 10-day interim injunction on the funeral following an application filed by Adwoa Safo’s brother, Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena over the burial of their late father.
On May 29, 2026, Adwoa Safo announced dates for the burial, stating that the burial ceremony would be held on July 30, 2026 at Gomoa Mpota, and the memorial service on July 31 at Independence Square, while on August 8 a thanksgiving service would be held in Kumasi.
However, her brother, Akofena and other family members claim they were not consulted.
The family claims that after the reading of the will, responsibility for custody of the body and funeral arrangements were vested in Akofena.
Lawyer for the Kristo Asafo Mission also clarified that the will named Akofena as head of the Kantanka family and entrusted him with “responsibilities relating to the late Apostle’s body, burial and funeral arrangements.”
Also, the family members alleged that they don’t know where the body is being kept.
Secretary to the Kantanka family, Dr. Philip Kissi Siaw, alleged that Adwoa Safo arranged for the body to be placed in a morgue, contrary to the Apostle’s wish not to be kept long in a morgue or to undergo autopsy.
Meanwhile, Adwoa Safo insists she is only trying to “uphold my father’s dying wishes” and enforce the church’s amended 2024 constitution.
She claims her father removed Akofena from church leadership in 2024 and installed her as leader of the Kantanka family in February 2025.
The burial rites are expected to continue over the coming days, with a final thanksgiving service planned.
According to the funeral committee, a memorial service will be held on July 31 at the Independence Square. Then, on August 8, they will travel to Asante Mampong in Kumasi for a thanksgiving service.
