MEMBERS OF the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) branch of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) yesterday laid down their tools in demand for improved working conditions.
According to members of the group, their working conditions, especially allowances paid to them, is nothing to write home about, adding that all their efforts to get it addressed have hit the rocks, hence leaving them with no choice but to embark on an industrial action.
The group whose members are non-teaching staff, openly lamented that allowances offered to their highest ranked personnel are nearly 50 per cent less than those received by the lowest members of the KNUST teaching staff.
The indefinite industrial action was declared after an emergency meeting on Monday, August 10, 2026, and members of GAUA would only return to work after their grievances have been duly addressed by the government.
GAUA Secretary, Phanuel Seli Kwadzo Asense, bemoaned that the allowance disparity between their members and the teaching staff is too wide adding that it is adversely affecting their welfare and hindering their output in the university.
He indicated that letters sent to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and other government stakeholders for their demands to be addressed have proved futile, urging government to take action about their issues now “if indeed it’s a listening government”.
Significantly, the strike will affect administrative offices at the IT, accounting, development departments and the University’s hospital.
