GRABBED! Akua Abrokwaa
A 47-year-old woman, identified as Akua Abrokwaa, has been arrested by the police at Akim Oda in the Eastern Region for allegedly burying her newborn grandchild alive at Akoroso, near Koforidua.
The disturbing incident, which reportedly occurred shortly after the woman’s daughter delivered the baby on Sunday, has thrown residents of the community into shock.
Akua Abrokwaa is alleged to have taken the newborn and buried it at an undisclosed location within the community.
A video sighted by the DAILY GUIDE showed the suspect in handcuffs leading some community members and police personnel to the spot where the baby was allegedly buried.
The group was seen digging the ground to retrieve the newborn. After the exhumation, the baby was reportedly placed in a cardboard box.
According to the Assembly Member for the area, Kofi Quainoo Stephenas, residents became suspicious about the circumstances surrounding the newborn and subsequently reported the matter to the traditional authorities.
Speaking to the DAILY GUIDE, Mr. Stephenas said the matter was initially brought before the chief, who summoned Akua Abrokwaa to appear before him.
He said the suspect, however, allegedly refused to honour the chief’s invitation, forcing the matter to be escalated and subsequently reported to the police.
The Assembly Member confirmed that both Akua Abrokwaa and her daughter are currently in police custody at Oda, assisting with investigations.
He said the police were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged burial and determine what exactly happened to the newborn.
The police have not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to establish whether the baby was alive when it was allegedly buried and the events leading to the incident.
The shocking development has sparked concern among residents, with calls growing for a thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the alleged act.
