Ghana’s Black Princesses have been eliminated from the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup after suffering a 4-0 defeat to France in their final Group C match in Poland.
The result condemned Charles Sampson’s side to another group-stage exit, extending Ghana’s unwanted record to eight consecutive tournaments without reaching the knockout stage since their debut in 2010.
Ghana went into the match knowing that avoiding defeat would keep their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds alive.
Following their victory over South Korea in their previous game, Sampson made one change to his starting line-up, with Latifa Abesik replacing the injured Esther Asamoah.
The Black Princesses thought they had taken an early lead when Priscilla Mensah found the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Ghana remained disciplined defensively and went into halftime level with France.
However, France took control after the break, scoring four unanswered goals to secure a convincing victory and hand Ghana their second defeat of the tournament.
South Korea’s win over Ecuador also meant Ghana finished bottom of Group C with three points.
France topped the group with seven points, while South Korea finished second on four points and Ecuador third on goal difference.
The result also means three of Africa’s four representatives have now been eliminated, following the earlier exits of Benin and Tanzania.
