Gold Fields Ghana Limited sees education as one of the most important ways through which it can contribute to the sustainable development of its host communities.
The mining company believes that when it invests in education, it is investing in the future of its communities, the country and the next generation.
The Vice President, Community, Gold Fields Ghana Limited, Dr. Celestina Allotey disclosed this at the 2026 Gold Fields Ghana Foundation Scholarship Awards Ceremony.
In all, 150 tertiary students from the company’s host communities were awarded scholarships.
Out of the 150 total recipients, 86 were females and 50 of the beneficiaries completed their basic education in schools located directly within the host communities.
The scholarship covers academic facility user fees, accommodation, stipends, and approved learning materials.
Dr. Allotey said since the establishment of the scholarship programme, 3,092 students have benefitted from the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation scholarship.
She added that over the years, the Foundation has provided classroom blocks and furniture for schools in its host communities.
“Through our reading programme, we have distributed over 40,000 learning materials to children in our host communities.
“We will also continue to support the Ghana Education Service in the supervision and monitoring of schools within our host communities,” she pointed out.
She disclosed that as part of this year’s support, Gold Fields will provide Toyota Hilux vehicles to the Ghana Education Service offices in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly and the Prestea Huni Valley Assembly to support their monitoring activities.
Prof. Bernard Kumi Boateng, Vice Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, described Gold Fields Ghana as the best single company in Ghana when it comes to supporting host communities.
He mentioned the $16 million Tarkwa Akoon Stadium and the 33-kilometre asphalt road connecting Abosso to Damang at a cost of over $27 million as the major legacy infrastructure by Gold Fields.
He emphasised that such projects provide tangible benefits to local communities and set a benchmark for corporate social investment in Ghana’s mining sector.
Prof. Boateng urged Gold Fields to establish a lasting physical footprint on the UMaT campus by constructing a dedicated faculty block, estimated at $1.5 million.​
The Sustainability Development Manager, Community Relations of Gold Fields Ghana, Robert Siaw, encouraged the beneficiaries to take their education seriously and remain committed to excellence.
