General Corporal Robert Koranteng
The Ghana Police Service has identified, arrested and interdicted General Corporal Robert Koranteng in connection with the death of Ivan Apprey Baidoo, a second-year law student of Central University.
Baidoo, 23, died following a motorbike crash on the Tema Motorway on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at about 4 p.m.
The development follows investigations into a viral video relating to the incident, with the Police saying General Corporal Koranteng is currently in custody.
In a statement, the Police said its Homicide Unit was intensifying investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding Baidoo’s death.
It said the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) had also been tasked to investigate the conduct of the officer.
“The Ghana Police Service has identified, arrested and interdicted General Corporal Robert Koranteng in connection with the death of 23-year-old Ivan Baidoo. The Ghana Police Service assures the public that the matter is being thoroughly investigated and that appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigations,” the statement said.
The Police action follows a petition by Baidoo’s family to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), requesting a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to the petition, filed by Nyamekye & Partners on behalf of Baidoo’s father, Evans Baidoo, Ivan had left his home at Old Ashongman to play football with friends at East Legon.
He had booked a YANGO-operated motorcycle with registration number M-26-AB 384, ridden by Samuel Arthur Wesley.
The petition said Wesley told investigators at the Airport Police Station that a member of a police patrol team riding another motorcycle began chasing them from the UPSA-Legon junction towards the Tema Motorway.
According to the rider’s account contained in the petition dated September 7, 2026, the police officer caught up with them and allegedly “hit them from the back of the motorbike”, causing the rider and Baidoo to fall.
The petition named the officer as General Corporal Robert Koranteng.
Baidoo reportedly sustained severe injuries, including head injuries, broken ribs and internal bleeding, and subsequently died.
The rider survived the crash but sustained less serious injuries.
The family subsequently petitioned the CID to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that appropriate action was taken.
The Police Service said investigations were continuing and assured the public that appropriate action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigations.
