Premier League refereeing body, Pro Ref, has admitted an “error of judgement” in allowing Erling Haaland’s winning goal in Manchester City’s derby victory over Manchester United.
Haaland scored in the 60th minute at Old Trafford, converting at the back post from Josko Gvardiol’s cross. The goal was initially ruled out for offside before the video assistant referee intervened and overturned the decision, with Patrick Dorgu’s boot deemed to have played Haaland onside.
However, questions were raised over whether Enzo Fernandez, who was in an offside position and diving towards the ball, had interfered with play.
In a statement, Pro Ref said Fernandez did not make contact with the ball, making the offside decision subjective. However, the refereeing body acknowledged that VAR should have recommended an on-field review because of the likely impact of Fernandez’s position.
“Contact has been made with Manchester United this evening to acknowledge what we deem is an error of judgement. A review of the incident will take place,” Pro Ref said.
United defender, Lisandro Martinez, described the decision as an “injustice”, while manager Michael Carrick said he was “confused” by the ruling.
The controversy came in a match that saw City reduced to 10 men in the first half after, Phil Foden was shown a straight red card for kicking out at United captain Bruno Fernandes.
Foden was dismissed by referee Michael Oliver in the 23rd minute after kicking Fernandes in the midriff while the midfielder was on the ground.
