Commercial Drivers Declare Nationwide Strike

Commercial transport operators have declared a nationwide strike on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, in protest against “the government’s failure” to enforce traffic regulations prohibiting trading at bus stops and pedestrian walkways.

The transport operators have accordingly directed their members to park their vehicles from Wednesday until further notice, in a move to disrupt public transportation and leave commuters struggling to get to work, school and other destinations.

The announcement was made in a public notice issued on November 1, 2026 and signed by representatives of five transport organisations.

They are Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, True Drivers Union, Ghana Committed Drivers Association and Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana.

The transport operators accused the government and the Ghana Police Service of neglecting their responsibility to enforce Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2519, Regulation 142, which they said prohibits trading at bus stops and on pedestrian walkways.

They argued that while the state authorities had failed to address the occupation of bus stops by traders, the government was rolling out the TRAFFITECH-GH system to penalise commercial drivers.

“We cannot operate in bus stops occupied by traders and still be fined by cameras,” the groups stated.

According to the operators, the situation had made it difficult for drivers to carry out their duties without risking penalties under the traffic enforcement system.

They expressed regret over the inconvenience the planned action would cause the public but insisted that they had been left with no alternative.

“We apologise for the inconvenience, but we are left with no option,” the notice stated.

The transport operators consequently directed all drivers under their respective organisations to park their vehicles on Wednesday and remain off the roads until further notice.
