Nathaniel Bassey
Renowned Nigerian gospel minister, Nathaniel Bassey, has made history as the first African gospel artiste to surpass 1 billion views on YouTube.
His official YouTube channel, “Nathaniel Bassey Main,” which was created on March 4, 2011, has accumulated over 1,014,544,577 views, cementing his status as one of the most influential worship leaders on the continent.
The channel, which Bassey describes as being home to “anointed and inspiring songs and videos,” states that he lives for two major reasons: “To GLORIFY JESUS, and To EDIFY PEOPLE.”
Before his full transition into gospel ministry, Bassey was a prominent figure in Nigeria’s jazz scene. He was band leader and lead trumpeter of the prestigious Steve Rhodes Orchestra and also played with the Spectrum 4 jazz quartet. His trumpet has since become the signature of his worship ministry.
His debut gospel album, ‘Elohim’, was recorded and mixed in Cape Town, South Africa in 2008. He rose to national and international prominence with worship anthems such as ‘Imela’ featuring Enitan Adaba, ‘Onise Iyanu’, ‘Olowogbogboro’, ‘Olorun Agbaye’, and ‘Tobechukwu’.
Beyond music, Pastor Bassey is widely known for the #Hallelujah Challenge, an online praise and prayer movement launched in June 2017 that gathers hundreds of thousands of believers from around the world for midnight worship sessions on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
He serves as Pastor of The Oasis Lagos, the youth church of the RCCG King’s Court in Victoria Island, Lagos, and in January 2025, he ministered at the US Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast in Washington DC.
He is married to Pastor Sarah Bassey since April 13, 2013, and they have two children.
The 1 billion views milestone makes him not only the first Nigerian gospel artiste to achieve the feat but the first gospel artiste from Africa to do so.
