Golden Star Wassa Wins Inter- Mines First Aid, Safety Competition

Prize presentation to Golden Star after the What Do You Know quiz contest

Golden Star Wassa Mine in the Western Region has once again won the National Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition.

It was organised by the Ghana Chamber of Mines in partnership with the St. John’s Ambulance Service and the Minerals Commission.

The competition, which precedes the annual mining industry awards, saw Golden Star Wassa Mine excel in both the practical and oral segments.

It is held annually to demonstrate how industrial health, safety, and emergency response help safeguard lives. This year’s competition was on the theme “Safety First, Safety Always.”

The event bridges the gap between mining operations and the public by featuring two categories: Mine teams–comprising employees trained to handle high-stakes industrial medical scenarios and Community teams —comprising residents from local host communities equipped with primary life-saving skills.

During the practicals, competing teams enacted and resolved simulated first aid and safety scenarios.

The practical competition was hosted by Golden Star Wassa Mine in its Akyempim community, competing against Asante Gold Bibiani, Adamus Resources, and Asante Gold Chirano.

Golden Star emerged winners with 57.5 points, followed by Asante Gold Bibiani with 53 points, Adamus Resources with 50.5 points, and Asante Gold Chirano with 48.5 points.

Later, the oral quiz portion tested teams on safety and first aid knowledge in the popular quiz competition – ‘What Do You Know’. Golden Star Wassa proved strong once again, securing the overall championship title.

The CEO of the company, Lianghua Lin, emphasised that first aid is a vital expression of humanity and a non-negotiable priority for safeguarding the workforce and host communities.
