The Accra East Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has donated relief and a sorted items to displaced victims of the aftermath of the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams, at Mepe in the Volta Region, becoming the first state institution to do so.
The items which included food items, clothes and toiletries and worth GH₵60,000, are meant to alleviate the plight of the victims who have lost their livelihood and properties.
The spillage of the two dams last month has affected over 12,000 individuals who have now been temporarily moved into makeshift camps and classrooms.
Funds for the items were generated through contributions by Management Accra East ECG, staff, and third party contractors of the power supplier.
The items included 22 bags of corn flour, 10 bags of cassava dough, 10 bags of gari, 50 pieces of mattress, 500 bags of sachet water, 10 bags of second-hand clothing, assorted drinks, sanitizer, 20 boxes of mackerel and toiletries.
The Accra East Manager of ECG, Bismark Otoo who handed over the items noted that as a responsible company, ECG is deeply committed to the welfare and well-being of its customers.
He said the donation forms part of the company’s efforts to help the victims as they strive to recover from the losses.
“Our donation includes food supplies, clean drinking water, toiletries, clothes , mattresses, blankets and other basic necessities. We hope that these items will provide some relief and assistance to you and your families as you begin to rebuild and recover from this unfortunate event,” Mr. Otoo said.
According to him, the company recognises the importance of supporting its customers and communities during challenging times, and it is committed to playing its part in the victim’s recovery.
“Our company’s core value lies in delivering reliable electricity services, but we also understand the responsibility we have in contributing to the broader well-being of society.
Your trust in us as your energy provider is of utmost importance, and we will continue to strive for excellence in meeting your expectations.”
Mr. Otoo assured the victims that they are not alone in this trying time as the ECG Accra East Region and the entire ECG family were there to support them, adding that “Together, we will rebuild, recover, and restore the vibrancy of your community.”
Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who joined the traditional rulers of the area to receive the items, expressed gratitude to the team and thanked them for the thoughtful gesture which he said will go a long way to alleviate the plight of the victims.
He said the company has shown that it is not only interested in keeping the powers on but is also interested in people remaining alive, being healthy so that they can continue to be good clients.
“You have really shown that at the end of the day we are all human beings first and foremost and we have a common humanity. So when your brother or sister is in distress, is devastated, has lost everything, it affects you, it diminishes that common humanity and you have proven today that you are good partners we can count on and we can rely on,” Mr. Ablakwa added.
He was also particularly pleased that the community did not have to appeal for funds or write to the company but it did the donation on its own volition.
“We are really touched with this act of kindness, the compassion that you have exhibited today, we are very, very grateful. And North Tongu will never forget you and we will always pray for the good Lord to bless you and bless all the 800 or more staffs who contributed. We want them to know that we are not only grateful but we are going to make sure that all the items directly benefit the people”
Togbe Azagba, Warlord and Divisional Chief of Mepe also thanked the Accra East ECG team for the donation which he said was greatly appreciated by the community.
