AESL Threatens Sit-Down Strike In Volta

Staff of the Architectural & Engineering Services Limited (AESL) in the Volta Region have joined their colleagues across the country to demand their seven months’ salary arrears.

They have threatened to embark on a sit-down strike.

They claimed they had been surviving on loans since August 2017 and asked government to intervene and save the company from imminent collapse.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Christian Kwawu, Local Workers Union Secretary, said if the arrears were not paid by Monday, February 19, 2018, they would close down the offices.
He said the staff were also not happy about the continued stay in office of the Managing Director, whose contract they alleged ended in January 2018 and asked government to act.

Mr Kwawu bemoaned the absence of board of directors for the company for over a year and the lack projects for staff to execute since 2015.
“We are really suffering. Since 2015, there have been projects. All jobs go to private consultants. They only call us when they encounter any challenges,” he declared.

The staff, who were clad in red, chanted war songs and said they would not back down on their one-week ultimatum.
