Ahafo Citizens Cry Over Bloated Register

Stakeholders in Ahafo Area intensify campaign for yes vote for Ahafo Region

Residents of Ahafo in the Brong Ahafo Region have disclosed that foreigners on the voters’ register were used to influence the outcome of the 2016 general elections.

They added that some politicians who were bent on winning the election brought the foreigners to the area to vote in the last election.

“Most of the people have travelled back to their countries but their names are still on the voters’ register for the impending referendum.”

They made the disclosure during a stakeholders’ meeting with the Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Evans Opoku Bobie on theme, ‘Arise for the creation of Ahafo Region on Saturday.

They stated, “During the 2016 elections, the NDC brought in foreigners from our neighboring countries, and they are still on the register though they have left for their countries, and we fear this might affect the required 50 percent turnout and 80 percent yes votes to get the new region,” they alleged.

They also said that the absence of illegal ‘galamsey’ operators, who also voted during the 2016 election in communities in Ahafo, would also affect the outcome of the impending referendum.

They stated that students who have been registered to vote would also be on vacation during the referendum.

Evans Opoku Bobie, on his part, pleaded with all electorate who voted during the 2016 election to come back and vote and promised that special arrangement would be made for them.

Nana Wereko Ampem ll, Kontihene of Kukuom Traditional Area, pledged his commitment to supporting the process by preventing foreigners from travelling to the area to vote in the referendum.

Asunafo South District Chief Executive (DCE), Robert Dwomo Mensah, applauded the various stakeholders, including the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asunafo South, Collins Dauda, for their commitment to the development of the region so far.
