A former New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Akwatia in the Eastern Region, Mercy Adu Gyamfi, popularly known as Ama Sey, has made a bid to reclaim the seat for the party.

Her move comes after the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flipped the seat in a high-profile 2020 election, with Ernest Kumi as the NPP’s candidate.

Mr. Kumi had won the NPP parliament slot with 227 votes to Ama Sey’s 223 votes, but lost the main election to the NDC candidate, Henry Boakye Yiadom alias Okoyo.

Following the terrible experience, some NPP polling station executives and Electoral Area Coordinators on Friday picked nomination forms for Ama Sey in the hopes that she would be chosen as the party’s parliamentary candidate to take the seat from the NDC in the 2024 elections.

Presenting the forms to Ama Sey, the group’s leader, Obi-Dombie Kofi Ntiamoah, stated that picking the form for her is a demonstration of their support for her success in both the NPP primaries and the general election in 2024.

Ama Sey, he said, is a leader people can trust, intimating that the former MP’s contribution, selflessness, and dedication to the development of the Akwatia Constituency are unparalleled, and this is an example of exemplary and dedicated leadership.

In a response, Ama Sey expressed gratitude to the polling station executives and the Electoral Area Coordinators for the confidence reposed in her.

She stated her resolve to reclaim the NPP’s Akwatia seat, saying, “I believed in God who blesses people to be wealthy.” He will be my guide in this endeavor, and we will undoubtedly win back the seat.”

Mrs. Adu-Gyamfi was elected to Ghana’s parliament in December 2016 after winning the Akwatia seat.

She received 21,433 votes out of 37,716 valid votes cast, representing 57.21% against her opponent, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed.

She was a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Employment and Social Welfare.
