Aphia Sakyi
Having toured fashion shows across the globe and collaborated with American celebrities such as Ciara, Tiffany Haddish and Janet Jackson, fashion designer Aphia Sakyi is set to introduce her latest accessory collection dubbed ‘Still I Rise’.
When asked what inspired this new fashion line, Aphia quoted a famous liberation quote enshrined on the walls of the Elmina Castle.
She averred in a very calm tone, “In everlasting memory of the anguish of our ancestors, our latest collection labelled ‘Still I Rise’ tells the story of African humanity through our luxurious accessory pieces.”
“May those who died rest in peace. May those who return find their roots. May they never again perpetrate such injustice against humanity. We the living vow to uphold this.”
The new collection, according to Aphia, is intended to honour black liberators of African descent in commemoration of the ‘Year of Return’.
Aphia hopes the collection would give her further global impact and complement her long time conviction of supporting talented but needy fashion designers to materialise their ambitions.
Magdalene Afia Sakyi was born in the Brong Ahafo Region. While studying Business Administration at the Regent University of Ghana, Aphia decided to switch to her long time passion of designing and clothing; a decision she has no regrets for.
Starting out as a sales agent for a school uniform tailor in her vicinity, Aphia’s undying desire to improve her crafts pushed her to acquire knowledge in handcrafted African bags, beads and slippers from experienced artisans.
Aphia Sakyi, now a thriving fashion entrepreneur, manages her own design school and fashion label established in Labone, a suburb of Accra.
Aphia’s outstanding accessory designs has gained recognition across the globe , with her last collection ‘50 Shades of Print’ being featured by music icon Janet Jackson in her first Instagram video in honour of her brother Michael Jackson which went viral.
