St Thomas Aquinas Senior High School located at Cantonments, Accra has emerged proud winners of the maiden edition of Senior High School (SHS) Moot Court Competition held at the auditorium of the New Law Court Complex in Accra recently.

They received a trophy, medals and a certificate of participation from the organizers and sponsorers of the event as their prize while Presbyterian SHS which placed second and six other participating schools received medals and certificates.

The Justices who superintended over the Moot Court were their Lordships Barbara Tettey Charway, Kyei Baffour and Ackaah-Boafo all justices of the High Court of Ghana.

According to Dr. Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, Snr. Lecturer, School of Law, the Moot Court Project for SHS students is being organized in collaboration with the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa and is expected to involve all second cycle institutions in the coming years.

Dr. Appiagyei-Atua further indicated that the objective of the programme, among other things, was to engage the mooting skills of secondary school students throughout the country over topical constitutional law issues that affect the enjoyment of their fundamental human rights on their respective campuses.

He expressed the hope that the competition will serve as a platform for students to develop their knowledge, understanding and application of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and the values that it embodies.

‘We are happy to collaborate with our South African partners in this drive which will serve as a stepping stone for promoting student interest to pursue law at the university,” he stated.

Vice President of African Heights Foundation, Egya Kojo Botwe indicated that the Moot Court Competition was in two parts; the Preliminary Competition which was opened to eight institutions selected from Accra and the Final round which was held for two institutions at the New Court Complex in Accra last Friday.

St. Thomas Aquinas and Presbyterian Boys SHS who qualified for the final round were represented by two students each during the event.
