DCOP Frank Abrokwah
In a significant development within the Ghana Police Service, unconfirmed reports indicate that Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr. Frank Abrokwah, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, has been transferred to the Police Headquarters in Accra.
This move comes in the wake of violent disruption of the recent Council of State elections in the Ashanti Region, triggering questions about the quality of policing during the exercise.
The regional police chief was said to be present during the exercise.
Sources suggest that DCOP Abrokwah’s transfer is directly linked to his handling of the chaotic situation that unfolded at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC).
On the day of the elections, a group of unidentified heavily built men stormed the venue when voting was underway, with the Chief of Agric Nsima, Nana Nkansah Boadu Ayeboafo leading the other contenders during the counting of ballots.
The attackers not only destroyed ballot papers, but also engaged in physical confrontations with election officials, causing panic and chaos among those present.
Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of mayhem, as the thugs disrupted what had been a peaceful electoral process. The violence drew widespread condemnation from various stakeholders, including political parties and civil society organisations, who expressed concern over the safety and integrity of electoral processes in the region.
While the Police Service have not officially commented on DCOP Abrokwah’s transfer, sources indicate that the current Commander of the Central West Police Region is expected to take over his responsibilities in Ashanti Region.
The violent incident has prompted a swift response from the police. In a press statement released shortly after the disturbances, the police announced that they are actively pursuing the perpetrators responsible for the unrest at the ARCC. They assured the public that investigations are underway and that all necessary measures will be taken to bring those involved to justice.
