The ongoing national disinfection exercises in markets, lorry stations and other public places demonstrate government’s unrelenting resolve to eradicate the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in the country.

The exercise, spearheaded by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, entered its third phase in the Ashanti Region last Friday.

According to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asokwa in Kumasi, Akwannuasah Gyimah, all public spaces in his municipality are being disinfected to keep residents safe and fight the pandemic at the same time.

“We are supporting the Zoomlion Company with whatever assistance they need to make the exercise a success,” he said.

The Asokwa MCE commended the market women for complying with the process even at a short notice, while also appealing to the public to intensify the adherence to the Covid-19 protocols.
“My advice is that everybody should continue to wear their mask and practise social distancing. Unfortunately people have relaxed on the protocols. I think if we are able to observe these protocols this virus can vanish,” the MCE emphasized.

The Ashanti Region General Manager (GM) of Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL), Asante Yeboah, reiterated the need for the people in the region to continue observing the Covid-19 protocols, urging, “Anytime you decide to go to a public place, always remember to wear a nose mask and carry along an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

He said Covid-19 was real, and “all of us risk it if we do not take the Covid-19 protocols seriously.”

He said the exercise was covering over 400 markets in addition to lorry stations and other public spaces.

The Ashanti Region’s exercise began at the Agogo Community Market at Atonsu, a suburb of Kumasi, where all spaces in the markets were disinfected.

The disinfection crew then moved to the Asokore-Mampong Lorry Terminal and Sepe-Tinpom, all in the Asokore-Mampong Municipality.
