Assemblyman Drowns En Route To Campaign

The late Manasseh Addison Sackey

Manasseh Addison Sackey, the Assembly Member for Tebrebe Electoral Area in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region, has drowned while on a campaign tour.

The assembly member, popularly known as ‘Teacher Obuor’, and current Deputy Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency, drowned in the Bonsa River in the area on Tuesday.

Information gathered indicated that the assembly member, who is also the headteacher of Aboponiso MA School was on his way from his electoral area, Tebrebe to Mile 10 and half, to campaign when the unfortunate incident occurred.

The incumbent assembly member, who was seeking re-election, was traveling with four others in a canoe, which was said to be one of those he recently donated to the people in the area.

According to sources, on their way, the canoe capsized causing the four to fall into the river. Two of them managed to swim out of the river while the other two, including the assembly member got drowned.

Some of the residents in the electoral area could not fathom why the assembly man was campaigning, since he was bound to be retained because of the good job he has done in the electoral area.

Others also indicated that he was campaigning probably because two other people were contesting him this time round.

The Director of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Francis Amoah, pointed out that the accident happened at about 1pm on Tuesday.

He said the lifeless body of Teacher Obuor was retrieved from the river at about 3pm and subsequently deposited at a morgue in Tarkwa.

He, however, mentioned that the body of the other person, identified only as Abeka, was yet to be recovered after the necessary traditional rites had been performed.
