SELECTED ASSEMBLYMEN from the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), in the Ashanti Region, have been enlightened on how their contributions could boost Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG)’s operations.
At a one-day workshop in Kumasi, some selected facilitators in the Ashanti Regional ECG, took turns to educate the assemblymen and Presiding Members (PM) on the processes involved in ensuring cost effective power delivery.
Ing Joseph Amakyi, the ECG Director, Ashanti Business Unit, said issues like illegal connections, unauthorized metering, illegal extension of network and installation of unauthorized meters, still remain some of ECG’s major problems.
He added that the use of substandard electrical materials which are installed into the network and poor monitoring and control of streetlights in the various municipalities and districts affect ECG’s efficient delivery.
In this regard, Ing Amakyi entreated the assemblymen and PMs, who live closely with the community members on daily basis, to support ECG so that the above mentioned problems could be effectively resolved.
Ing David Asamoah, Ashanti ECG General Manager, Customer Services, stated that ECG is seeking to collaborate with the assemblymen and PMs to significantly reduce its commercial losses.
On his part, the Ashanti ECG Communications Manager, Erasmus Kyere Baidoo, said it has been realized that ECG incurs huge commercial losses through poor monitoring and control of streetlights in the various communities.
He stated that the one-day workshop for the assemblymen and PMs is among several ECG initiatives to help reduce commercial losses so that the company can continue to offer spectacular services to the citizenry.
Topics they discussed include ‘How the Various Assemblies can assist ECG to Monitor and Police the Existing Network so as to Prevent People from Tapping Power Illegally’ and ‘the Dangers of using Sub-standard Materials to Extend Network’.
Mr. Kyere Baidoo disclosed that 214 assemblymen and PMs from 42 assemblies attended the programme.
