Kojo Oppong Nkrumah at the radio station
A new local FM station, Nzema FM, has been inaugurated at Axim in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.
The station, which broadcasts mainly in Nzema and the Akan languages is broadcasting on 96.5 FM and can be listened to in the whole of Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira area and beyond.
The new FM station located at the centre of the ancient fishing town of Axim was already the talk of the area just some few weeks after going live. Nzema FM is the sound you hear in taxi cabs, on people’s smart devices, in the shops and in homes.
The launch was performed by the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, at a ceremony last Saturday.
He said the new radio station ought to enforce its core mandate of informing, educating and entertaining its listeners with developmental issues, to transform society positively.
“I am urging all the staff and those who will be working in different capacities at the radio station to portray professional and ethical conducts in the discharge of their duties,” he said.
He continued, “Do not go on air to speak anyhow or insult just because you have the microphone. Work according to the guidelines if you want the radio station to last and still have more listeners,” he told the workers.
He expressed the hope that the new station would serve as an inspiration for an improvement in broadcasting. He appealed to the station to strive to be fair, truthful and balanced in their reportage.
“We also hope that these broadcasts will serve not only to inform, educate and entertain our people but also encourage national unity and integration rather than breed hatred and acrimony,” he added.
Catherine Abelema Afeku, one of the brains behind the establishment of the FM station indicated that the process for acquiring licence to operate the radio station started about 10 years ago.
She also implored on the staff to treat fairly all those who would be given the opportunity to speak on the radio irrespective of their political, religious or ethnic affiliations.
The Omanhene of Lower Axim, Awulae Attibrukusu III, who chaired the programme, praised the MP for the area Madam Afeku for the initiative and called on the presenters to do their work devoid of insults.
From Emmanuel Opoku, Axim
