Ayitey Powers
Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been released after the Dansoman Circuit Court discontinued the case against him over an alleged death threat directed at National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
Ayitey Powers appeared before the court on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, after spending a week in custody in connection with the case.
He was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command on Monday, August 24, following the circulation of a social media video in which he was alleged to have threatened the life of Ampofo Ankrah.
His arrest came after the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) called for his arrest and prosecution over the alleged remarks.
However, the court has now discontinued the case, resulting in Ayitey Powers’ release.
The development brings an end to the current legal proceedings stemming from the video, which generated significant controversy within Ghana’s boxing community.
Ayitey Powers is a former professional boxer who represented Ghana during his career and remains a well-known figure in the country’s boxing fraternity.
