Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
The Flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has begun positioning the youth wing of the party as a key force in the NPP’s bid to recapture power in the 2028 general election.
Speaking at a meeting in Accra with leaders of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) from various universities on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, ahead of a three-day boot camp organised by the party, Dr. Bawumia said the NPP was investing in the training and preparation of young members to lead the party into victory.
According to him, the youth would play a decisive role in the next elections, making it necessary for the party to equip them with leadership skills and political experience.
“I want you to be assured that this training programme is for your benefit because we want the youth to take key leadership positions,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia explained that the party could not entrust young members with future responsibilities without adequately preparing them for leadership.
“And we cannot get you into key leadership positions if we don’t prepare you for the uptake of these leadership positions,” he added.
The former Vice President expressed confidence that the NPP could make a strong comeback in 2028 if the party intensifies its mobilisation efforts and strengthens its engagement with young voters across the country.
“Inshallah, it is going to happen in 2028. It is possible. And we are going to work towards it,” he declared.
He emphasised that the party would not leave victory to chance but would work diligently through organisation, training and sustained political engagement.
“We are not going to sit down and say it will happen, but we are going to work,” he stressed.
Dr. Bawumia noted that the nation’s electoral landscape is increasingly dominated by the youth, making student mobilisation and leadership development central to the NPP’s strategy ahead of the next polls.
“The youth will take over the key positions as we move forward in this country. You know that the vote is largely youth-dominated. 2028, as it was in 2024, will be a youth-dominated election,” he said.
He also announced plans to deepen the party’s interaction with TESCON by embarking on visits to tertiary campuses to engage students on the NPP’s policies, ideas and vision for the country.
“We will take the debate, the ideas to the country, and we will make our case,” he noted.
Dr. Bawumia further maintained that the party would remain resolute despite what he described as attempts at political intimidation.
“We are, however, saying that we will not be intimidated. You can arrest all of us. We will come back and make our case to the people of Ghana,” he stated.
He urged TESCON leaders to remain united and take full advantage of the bootcamp training programme aimed at preparing the next generation of party leaders.
