Bawumia, Year Group Steal Show

Dr. Bawumia in the midst of members of his year group during the activities

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his 1980 Year Group members last weekend stole the show at their school’s 65th anniversary celebration on the school’s premises in Tamale.

Dr. Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) vice presidential candidate in the forthcoming elections whose earlier donations to the school on his behalf and his Year Group overwhelmed all who heard about the gesture and this against the backdrop of his strides on the political space, has put him high on the public chart.

Although the various year groups have produced personalities who are flying the name of the school across the world, Bawumia’s, which includes the Governor of the Bank of Ghana among others, did the school proud for the outstanding donation.

The running mate, during the activities, sat among his former class mates reliving the past, as it were, with those he had not seen in a long time.

It was an event which had old boys and girls converging upon the Northern Regional capital from far and near.

The celebration by Northern Regional premier second cycle institution was beclouded by a non-release of feeding grant from the government.

The headmaster, Shaibu Adams Wilberforce said the school is among second cycle institutions in the three regions which have not yet received their feeding grants; a situation which is putting avoidable stress on the school heads.

“Feeding grants have not been forthcoming and for two terms, schools in the three regions of the north have not received feeding grants” he said adding that the grant should be released immediately to obviate temporary shutdown.

“I am making an appeal as a leader of all school heads in the north to President Mahama to do something about the situation. I hope by next week we will see something because we seriously need money.”

He complained about wanton encroachment on the school land which has kept the students and staff under siege.

The theme for Tamasco’s 65th Anniversary and 22nd Speech and Prize Giving Day celebration is “Sixty five years of Tamasco: a legacy of educational excellence built on the foundation of Fortiter, Fideliter and Feliciter” which is its motto.

The Guest speaker, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Nashiru Issahaku proposed that his alma mater’s speech and prize giving day should be celebrated annually.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia donated an ambulance to the school.

Ahead of the event, he made a cash donation of GH¢50,000 cedis for the renovation of the school’s old Assembly Hall.
He earlier gave GH¢15,000 cash for the refurbishment of his former Weimah House where he was a prefect.

Dr. Bawumia also presented sporting equipment to the school’s sports department.

Tamasco was established in 1951 as a government boys school, then Government Secondary School, Gbewaa Boys School and now Tamale Senior High School (Tamasco).

The late vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, the late philanthropic medical doctor, David Abdulai Choggu, the Chief of the Defense Staff, Air Marshal Samson Michael-Oje who did his sixth form there having done the five year course at the Navrongo School, Justice Williams Atuguba, Professor Abdulai Salifu and Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners, Ibrahim Mahama, were all alumni of the school.
