Kwame Governs Agbodza
The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced that major roads constructed under government’s Big Push initiative will be tolled after completion.
Speaking at the 2026 Transport Sector Review in Ho, he stated that the government has re-enacted the Road Fund to provide sustainable financing for the maintenance of road infrastructure across the country.
He said, “We are taking steps to modernise revenue mobilisation through technology following Parliament’s approval of a 20-year public-private partnership concession in July 2026.”
The Minister mentioned that the Accra-Kumasi Expressway will attract toll charges, stressing that motorists will not be compelled to use the expressway if they do not want to pay the toll.
“Every interchange in our country will attract the attention of road tolling, especially the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, which comes with its own tolling system. Contractors have started returning to the existing Accra to Kumasi bypasses, and in a few weeks all of them will be back on site,” he added.
Mr. Agbodza used the opportunity to call for policies to restrict some heavy-duty vehicles from using certain public roads, arguing that such measures are necessary to prevent premature deterioration of the roads.
“The government is introducing a multi-lane and free-flow electronic tolling system, and this system will be implemented on every public road that has been improved,” he added.
