Apa Kalo on admission at the hospital
Residents of Bonsa, a farming community in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region, were horrified last Wednesday when one person was butchered to death, and some others suffered serious wounds after a bloody machete fight over a mining site in the area.
According to sources, the incident had machete-wielding young men, mostly galamsey operators, take over the streets in a battle that saw the firing of several gunshots.
It was gathered that about five galamsey operators who sustained machete wounds in the fight were rushed to the Tarkwa Government Hospital.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that it took the timely intervention of the police to avert an escalation of the already bloody situation.
The cause of the unfortunate incident was not immediately known, but sources had it that it was as a result of the conversion of a mining site at Bonsa into a community mining project by government.
It was revealed that for some time now some galamsey operators who used to work on the site had been clashing with the community mining workers.
“There had been a dispute over the said site even after the area was converted into a community mining project, with each party or faction laying claim to the area,” an eyewitness narrated.
According to the eyewitness, one Alhassan, who had allegedly been employed by the community mining project, was butchered to death, while another man, popularly called Apa Kalo, belonging to the other faction also sustained deep machete wounds, and in a critical condition.
He was initially admitted at the Tarkwa Government Hospital, but was later referred to the Korle-Bu Hospital in Accra for further treatment.
