The boy lying dead
TRAGEDY STRUCK when an 11-year-old boy unfortunately got drowned in the Owabi River at Akropong in the Ashanti Region on Monday morning.
The deceased, whose name and other details are not yet known, is reported to have gone to swim in the river with about six other boys.
While swimming and having fun in the river, three of the boys suddenly got trapped in the river, but their friends managed to swim and rescue two of them.
The third boy, who was not lucky, was unfortunately swept away by the river, which had then overflowed its banks due to a heavy rainfall the previous day.
The young boys, who were panicking, then rushed home to report about the drowning incident. People rushed to rescue the boy from the river but they failed.
The Assemblyman for Akropong Electoral Area, Isaac Kofi Nti, said it took the intervention of the traditional leaders in the town before the boy’s body was found.
According to him, on Tuesday, which was 24 hours after the incident, the chiefs poured libation and made some sacrifices in the river before the body was found.
The assemblyman said the body has since been given to the bereaved family. He warned the youth to stop swimming in rivers, especially during raining season.
