Brain Aneurysm Month Is Here

Dr. Doris Yaa Osei, a scientist of the Animal Research Institute (ARI), has reminded Ghanaians about brain aneurysm whose month is September.

A survivor of the health condition, she spoke to DAILY GUIDE about the month of September being set aside for awareness creation about brain aneurysm.

According to her, many do not know what the condition stands for, hearing it for the first time.

“Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month is observed globally. However, it is not observed as such in Ghana although the condition is real and claims thousands of lives annually in the country,” she said.

As a survivor of the condition, Dr. Doris Yaa Osei has established the Brain Aneurysm Foundation Ghana to spread awareness and help solicit for funds for persons needing support for treatment.

She recalled the case of a small boy aged about one and half years who recently had his treatment paid for through donations received by the foundation from people from all walks of life.

Explaining the symptoms of the condition, she said “it is characterised by severe excruciating headaches, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, pain behind and above the eye, nausea, vomiting, speech impairment and loss of memory.”

She hinted about a programme to be sponsored by some corporate entities to create awareness about the condition and how to address it.
