British Council Launches VET Toolbox Project In Tamale

The British Council has launched a €1.150.000 Vocational Education and Training Project in Tamale in the Northern region.

The €1.150.000 project is being delivered by the British Council being part of the European Union-funded VET Toolbox initiative with support from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and focuses on supporting skills development in the agriculture sector and aims to establish and pilot a framework for developing skilled human resources within the scope of the Savannah Zone Agricultural Productivity Improvement Project (SAPIP).

The project will be implemented in Northern and North East regions with training areas such as Tractor Operator’s Skills and Attitude, Farm Enterprise Management, and Agronomy.

The British Council Country Director, Nii Doodo Dodoo noted that the Vocational Education and Training VET Toolbox Project will give the people of the north decent jobs, skills, and opportunities.

He said the project at the end will impact the beneficiaries with skills, and networking as well as expand socio-economic activities across the north.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Northern Development Authority (NDA), Lawyer Sulley Sambian, at the launch reiterated that the NDA was established by an Act of Parliament, with a mandate to provide a framework for the comprehensive economic and social development of the Northern Development Zone and that to effectively execute its mandate, the NDA is tasked with providing strategic direction in the planning and prioritization of development projects through three main channels namely Coordinating development interventions, Mobilizing public resources, including financial resources and public and private investments and the formulation of development actions towards achieving maximum and inclusive development impacts in the zone.

The NDA Acting CEO indicated that the launch of the second phase of the VET Toolbox had come at a time the government had taken TVET a notch higher by the establishment of TVET institutions all over the country as a solution to reducing youth unemployment in the country.

He assured the British Council and its partners of NDA’s full support towards making the VET Toolbox intervention a success.

The European Union Programme Officer, Macro-economic and Trade section, EU in Ghana, Marta Brignone, stated that the project is implemented in 11 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa adding that the project work of the VET Toolbox will include supporting the human capital needs of value and supply chain development and investment programmes.

The Director-General, of Ghana TVET Services, Mawusi N. Awity, appealed for more women’s inclusivity in the project o enable them to enhance their skills in the Agric sector.

She urged stakeholders to make agriculture attractive for the youth adding that it can help reduce the unemployment rate in the country.

In attendance at the launch of the VET Toolbox Project were the Programme Officer, Macro-economic and Trade Section, EU in Ghana, Marta Brignone, Nii Doodo Doodo – British Council Country Director, Mrs. Mawusi N. Awity -Director General, Ghana TVET Services, Prof. Abass Seidu Braimah-Vice Chancellor, Tamale Technical University and a host of other stakeholders.
