An employee of CAL Bank at the Osu Branch has been sentenced to four years’ imprisonment in hard labour for stealing GH¢109,501.72 from the bank through dubious transactions.
The convict, Assan Dickson in September last year, opened two separate accounts in addition to the official one that he operates with the bank where he served as the financial officer.
He managed to copy the passwords of five authorizing officers of the bank and intermittently used them to transfer the funds into his three accounts.
The convict was able to withdraw all the money from the accounts.
Dickson, who was hauled before an Accra Circuit Court on one count of stealing, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Emmanuel Haligah, at the end of the trial, proved beyond reasonable doubt that the convict actually committed the crime for which he was hauled before the court.
The court, presided over Harriet Akweley Quaye, convicted him and sentenced him to four years’ imprisonment in hard labour.
The prosecution told the court that the financial controller at the Osu Branch of CAL Bank on September 27, 2016 noticed that the convict had opened two different accounts in addition to the official one he operates with the bank during his routine checks of the accounts.
He said further checks revealed that Assan Dickson had transferred GH¢109,501.72 into his three personal accounts and withdrew the funds on various dates.
Chief Inspector Haligah told the court that on October 25, 2016 the financial controller reported the matter to the police which led to his arrest.
He said Assan Dickson, in his caution statement, admitted the offence and indicated that he used the passwords of five authorizing officers of the bank to transfer the funds.
The prosecutor told the court that the convict further told the police that he used part of the money to support the education of his family members as well as meet his personal needs.
