The Cape Coast and Elmina Castles have extended their tour hours to 10 p.m. under the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.
Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, announced the move at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 10, 2026.
She said the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) had successfully tested night tours at the two castles before the extended hours were introduced.
“The Board and management of GMMB have successfully piloted night tours in Cape Coast and Elmina Castles,” Dzifa Gomashie said.
According to the Minister, the initiative aims to extend Ghana’s major tourism attractions beyond the traditional daytime period while creating new opportunities for businesses and workers in the sector.
She said the extended operating hours would also give both local and international tourists more flexibility to visit the historic sites.
The move she added formed part of the government’s broader plan to implement a 24-hour economy and increase economic activity within the tourism and creative arts sectors.
The Cape Coast and Elmina Castles remain among Ghana’s most significant heritage sites, attracting visitors interested in the country’s history and cultural heritage.
