Casely-Hayford Supports New Register

Sydney Casely-Hayford, a member of OccupyGhana, has said that the Electoral Commission (EC) must compile a new register as a means of finally cleaning the electoral roll.

The integrity of the data for him is the most critical thing in the debate over whether or not there must be a fresh compilation.

“This is a serious opportunity for us to once and for all get the data in that register corrected because there are too many things that have gone wrong,” he said during an interview.

He said he does not think that the current roll is clean in spite of the Supreme Court order in 2016 to remove the names of persons who registered with the National Health Insurance Scheme cards after a 2014 lawsuit by Abu Ramadan.

Concerns were raised at the time that there were names of foreigners who registered with the health insurance cards.

The EC eventually removed 56,000 names from the register. “There is likelihood that we still have people on the voters’ register with NHIA cards,” he added.
