The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has pledged the full support of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for the upcoming 2026 Democracy Cup scheduled for the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Friday, August 28, 2026.
The tournament is between Premier League giants Accra Hearts of Oak SC and Asante Kotoko SC.
He made the pledge when a delegation from the Speaker of Parliament, led by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, paid a courtesy call on his office as part of the Democracy Cup Trophy tour in the lead-up to the game.
Speaking at the gathering, Lt. Gen. Agyapong applauded the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for the initiative, noting that the Democracy Cup is vital in promoting national unity and democratic governance.
“This initiative to bring the country together to portray the need for democracy is commendable. Democracy thrives where there is peace, unity, and respect for law and order,” he stated.
“As the military, we will continue to reaffirm our resolve and commitment to the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and do everything we can to maintain the territorial integrity of Ghana and to push the democratic governance process forward so that as a country we can freely choose our leaders,” Lt. Gen. Agyapong added.
He assured the delegation of the Armed Forces’ active participation, saying “this is the only country we have, and each of us must play our part to ensure the country reaches its desired destination.”
Lt. Gen. Agyapong further emphasised that the GAF’s support will extend beyond the tournament itself to all efforts aimed at deepening Ghana’s democracy.
Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror expressed gratitude to the CDS and assured him that this year’s tournament will be one for the books.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has granted approval for Parliament to organise the 2026 Democracy Cup match scheduled for this Friday. The match is being organised to commemorate 32 years of parliamentary democracy in Ghana.
