The burial of late Ghanaian soldier, Major Maxwell Adams Mahama, came with a lot of sad moments, touching tributes and tears last Friday.
Ghanaians from different walks of life were at the forecourt of the State House, where a state funeral service was held for the fallen soldier.
In attendance were Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, some present and past government functionaries, members of the judiciary, the clergy, security officials and others. Personalities in the country’s entertainment industry and beyond also came out in their numbers to pay their last respect to the late Maxwell and also mourn with his family.
Noticeable among the entertainers were Akorfa Edjeani Asiedu, Fred Amugi, Abeiku Santana, Nana Ama McBrown, Ken Fiati, Emelia Brobbey, Roslyn Ngissah, Jackie Appiah, Ziggy Netson, Tony Prince Tometi, Koo Fori, Tagoe Sister, Sam Fiscian and others, including members of the Ghana Actors’ Guild.
Major Maxwell Adam Mahama was lynched on Monday, May 29, 2017 by a mob at Denkyira-Obuasi in the Upper Denkyira District in the Central Region, where he was working for the state.
At least 34 persons suspected to be connected to the murder have been arrested and remanded into police custody, while police investigations are ongoing.
In a tribute by Maxwell’s mother at the funeral, she made a touching request to meet the murderers of her son.
“I am a woman of faith, so death and dying are not my fears, but never in my wildest nightmares did I ever think I would be burying one of my sons. Never! The gruesome and horrific way my poor baby was snatched from this earth is beyond any words. It feels as if my heart has been ripped from my chest. I feel hollow, just moving about like an empty shell. My baby is gone forever. They have taken him away from me ooo. His life was cut short in a most violent and disgusting way. I need an answer to my question—WHY? Give me an opportunity to face these murderers so they can see and understand what they have done to a mother. Let me tell them what they do not know about my son, Adam. Let me show them his two innocent children. Tell them they have taken Barbara’s sunshine away,” she said.
A number of Ghanaian entertainers have since condemned the killing of Maxwell and have been pouring various tributes on their social media platforms.
