Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, has paid a glowing tribute to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his role in empowering women.

Speaking at the Durbar of Asanteman Queenmothers and Food Fair to mark the Silver Jubilee of the Asantehene, Madam Frema Osei-Opare underscored the significant role being played by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in bringing more women to the table.

“During your reign as Asantehene, we have seen visible signs of more queenmothers being actively involved in the management of the Ashanti kingdom,” she indicated.

For instance, she said queenmothers are now allowed to attend Asanteman Council meetings, which is a deliberate effort to empower women.

“Nana, your leadership style, not only inspires confidence but also sets a powerful example for the next generation of male leaders to follow,” she said.

Madam Frema Osei-Opare also commended Nana Konadu Yiadom III, Asantehemaa for always opening her doors to all persons and all manner of persons who come into contact with her.

She indicated that in the Ashanti kingdom, the role of females is seen in the matrilineal inheritance system, “as all of us take our roots from our mothers. Queenmothers are virtually determinants of who is the right heir to the stools.”

Madam Frema Osei-Opare said the silver jubilee durbar of queenmothers creates a unique advantage for women as it demonstrates the resolve to strengthen women participation in traditional governance.

“Let us continue to advocate for a deliberate effort, for more women in all facet of our national discourse, i.e. management levels in the public sector, religious organisations, schools, private sector organisations among others,” she added.

The Chief of Staff also appealed to the Otumfuo to add his voice to the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill, which is currently before parliament.

“Nana, Ashanti Region has the highest number of MPs (47) in Parliament, as compared to other regions, so your counsel can go a long way to ensure the passage of this Bill,” she said.
