Close Shave At Cantonments

One of the stories in this edition borders on security and for which reason demands swift action on the part of both the citizens and the law enforcement department.

There are pockets of security breaches which because of the nationalities of their perpetrators must have us rethinking some of our policies without compromising the position of the country in regional economic blocs.

When a non-Ghanaian lady thinks out a plan with the input of a Nigerian remand prisoner to smuggle into police cells a firearm to the latter we can be justifiably disturbed.

The story about prisoners who broke jail in the Owerri Prison in South of Nigeria some of which hardened prisoners are thought to have pitched camp here should prick our minds when the Cantonments Police Station incident is played out. These persons could have even partaken in some of the dastardly armed robberies in the country.

We will point it out once more that we have never been xenophobic and do not intend to be as our compatriots. Indeed the people of Ghana and Nigeria being former colonial stable mates shared a lot in common.

When criminals such as the one in the custody of the Cantonments Police Station and his girl friend go to the level they did we are hard-pushed not to regard the criminality as overreaching.

The busted attempt is a serious issue when the implications of the criminality is analysed. What was in the mind of the Nigerian remand prisoner when he asked the lady to smuggle in a locally manufactured pistol together with an AA cartridge?

The Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of the CID headquarters should be kind enough to share with us details about what Asuquo Mbuotidem Edem Faith sought to do with the locally manufactured pistol in detention.

He certainly was not going to use the firearm for fanfare in detention which is why we are curious.

This is an experienced criminal with many years of stalking and killing his human preys.

Could he be planning a jailbreak with the pistol or murdering the cops at the counter?

It is our prayer that the lady who bore the fried rice packs one of which contained the firearm and now at large is tracked down. Her ability to flee when the pistol was found under the fried rice sounds surreal.

With the CCTV camera capturing her image her trackers should be able to pick her up especially with public cooperation or even her boyfriend who was eagerly waiting for the pistol.

For the umpteenth time we shall encourage all to provide information of suspicious characters to the police for processing and action.

Ghana’s doors are open to law-abiding foreigners not criminals whose mission is palpable- perpetuate armed robbery.
