LANCE Corporal Amidu Osman, a police officer guarding a bullion van, has shot dead the driver of the van and injured another person at Manya Kpongnor, a suburb of Odumase-Krobo Municipal in the Eastern Region over the weekend.
The vehicle, with registration number GN 1630-12, was impeded by a rowdy crowd on its way to bury a dead person.
The cop was compelled to alight from the van to clear the way, firing a warning shot to achieve that objective.
He forgot to clear the weapon whose safety catch was not on safe and as he moved to board the vehicle there was an accidental discharge from the AK47 service weapon.
Confirming the incident to DAILY GUIDE, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, the Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Police Service, said the police officer was returning from Akosombo to Koforidua on a special duty.
According to him, the driver, on reaching Manya Kpongnor, a group of mourners blocked the road with a coffin and in an attempt to clear the road the police officer accidentally shot and killed the bullion van driver whose name is not yet known. He died instantly. A bystander also suffered a leg injury.
The injured person is currently receiving treatment at the Atua Government Hospital while the body of the driver has been deposited at the morgue of the same facility pending autopsy.
The police officer is currently assisting the police with investigations.
