Ghana has never been so morally contaminated as in the past few years, the run-up to the last general election being the peak of it all.
It was a period when the seeds of insults were sowed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which seeds have now germinated, sprouted and flowered.
The chalice is poisoned from which many are drinking, leaving the country morally contaminated seemingly beyond redemption.
Today, the negative effects of the poison which has received enormous impetus from the digital superhighway are all over the place, devouring even those who watered the plants of insults.
Last week, the Cyber Security Authority organised a forum for the media during which journalists were encouraged to take sides with the efforts to sanitise the digital space, especially as the effects on children is telling.
While we support such drive by the Authority, we would be quick to state that the media cannot do much to reduce the already morally contaminated society in which we are.
The media cannot be responsible for the sorry state in which we find ourselves in today. Unfortunately, the Authority is unable to delve so much into the genesis of the state in which we are today, public servants as they are.
Any project which seeks to address the challenges posed by the burgeoning insult industry in the country will fail if the genesis is not identified and shamed.
With characters like Kevin Taylor on the payroll of the NDC for his insults on opponents of the ruling party and others exalted for treading a similar path, the stage has already been set for the immoral standards to thrive.
An equal response from the other side of the political divide has commenced as a response from the force being exerted from their counterparts.
The emergence of a certain Ghana Jollof is a direct response to the Kevin Taylors, and we shudder to state that no amount of arrests will stall the growing instance of insults and smearing of reputations through deliberate arrangements from the corridors of power.
Kevin Taylor has already spilled the beans about his source of remunerations for his occupation.
As the leadership of the NDC feels the heat from the opposite of Kevin Taylor, let them know that they will be held responsible by posterity for plunging this country into this bottomless and immoral abyss.
Did we hear that those who share the insults will be apprehended? If we heard right that would be tantamount of an unacceptable selective law enforcement. What would be the fate of those who share the smelly vitriolic of Kevin Taylor?
A retired Supreme Court Justice has heaped praises on Kevin Taylor for, in his words, speaking the truth, where this veracity represents his performance.
A traditional leader aligned to the NDC is reported to have heaped plaudits upon Kevin Taylor. Aren’t they relishing the insults on social media or even sharing same?
Those who praise Kevin Taylor should realise that they are keeping the insult industry alive and should stop being hypocritical by calling for sanity.
As for the retired Supreme Court justice, we find his attitude hypocritical given the insults Kevin Taylor hurled at the judiciary and was wanted to come and answer questions therefrom.
He made a triumphant entry and received the highest level of courtesies from the state. At the court, he was pardoned, walking away as a free man.
This is the moral low this country has descended to, and it hurts. But as Jimmy Cliff’s hit song captured it – Time Will Tell.
